The Northern Tokoeka consists of two forms: Northern Brown Kiwi (still known from five endangered populations on North Island, best represented still in Northland), and Okarito Brown Kiwi, which has a small and critically endangered population. |
The Southern Tokoeka A. australis, from which Northern was split, is also known in two forms: Haast Tokoeka, which is critically endangered, and Southern Brown Kiwi, known from Fiordland and Stewart Island. The latter population is vulnerable and declining. |
